DESIGNING INCLUSIVE EARLY CHILDHOOD SETTINGS
The
floor plan of the school environment.
Background
of the school environment that was used for my practicum.
The principal of the
school which is the owner attended the University of West Indies and completed
her bachelors in education specialization in ECE & Family Studies, after
she was employed in a primary school; while she was teaching in the primary
school she decided it was time to open her own preschool. The preschool centre
is divided into five colourful learning areas consisting of Mathematics,
Language Arts, Spanish, Science & Social Studies, displaying a wide range
of visual presentations to assist with learning. It encompasses physical space
and a variety of learning resources.

The daily routine in the preschool might have some interchange from time to
time depending on what the teacher had plan for the day. There will be
different transitions throughout the day that will change the routine.
Best
Practice.
While I was in the school
for my practicum there were different practices that I saw whereas the teacher
will give children some toys or blocks and some children will interact while some
don’t. There will be activities that she will do with the children and some students will learn at their own pace while some will need assisting, in that
particular practice I remember Maria Montessori theory. Also there was another
observation that I made in the classroom that children will experience different
type of emotions throughout the day, some children will be able to explain
their emotions while others can’t so the teacher will use different techniques
to get the child to explain their emotions. In the classroom it have a
particular child that disrupt the class, so the teacher will discipline the child by talking to him but according to
B. F. Skinner “behaviors can learn through reinforcement or punishment”. Doing
outdoor activities with the children was fun and interesting whereas some
children would want to play with the teacher while some will play by themselves
or interact with others, playing with the children outdoor will encourage or
make the child feel happy and exciting that the teacher have interest to play a
game or interact with him/her.
Challenges.
The challenges that I
had observe in the classroom were children were distracted easily, can’t
remember what was taught five minutes ago, can’t give the teacher their
undivided attention for reading lessons and unfortunately don’t listen to the
teacher sometimes.
Example
of innovated teaching methods or family interactions.
The teacher showed
different teaching methods in the classroom by having an interactive learning
session with the children during the cooking activity or even reading session,
hands-on activity each day because that’s what children prefer at a smaller age
and before my practicum came to an end the teacher was organizing an Easter
celebrations whereas family have to attend with the children to
have a fun and entertaining day.
